My Granny Square Lapagan

I finished my granny square lapagan this morning! Only took me 4 days to create the whole thing…not too bad! Here are some pictures…

BTW, the quilt under the afghan is another one that my Mom made me 🙂

Here are the basic instructions:

Since this afghan was made using scraps, I can’t really give you exact amounts of yarn. If I were to make this afghan again using new yarn, I would buy 2 skeins of each color just to be safe (not the big “Super Saver” size, the smaller ones).

Susan’s Granny Lapagan

Size H hook
Worsted weight yarn
Color 1 – Pink
Color 2 – White
Color 3 – Lavender
Color 4 – Soft Gray

Start making a granny square. For 5 rounds do in pink (color 1). 2 rounds in white (color 2). 5 rounds in lavender (color 3). 2 rounds in white (color 2). 5 rounds soft gray (color 4). 2 rounds in white (color 2). 5 rounds pink (color 1). 2 rounds in white (color 2). (28 rounds total.)

With lavender (color 3), sc around perimeter of the granny square for 2 rows. Tie off. Switch to white (color 2) and shell around. Tie off and then weave in ends.

This worked up really quick and easy and I think it would make a great baby afghan as well. This one is going to a special little girl for Christmas (I know your reading this KJM…LOL…now you know part of what she’s getting!)

I still have a lot more yarn, so I think I’m going to do a variation of this pattern, only this time in boy colors. After I finish that one (another Christmas gift), I’m going to let Colt pick out the colors for one for him and also make one for Riley. Colt is always cold in the winter, so now he’ll have his own lapagan to keep him warm!

Wednesday Happenings

Two loads of laundry done!! It has been so nice here…temps in the low to mid 90’s, so the house is bearable and my energy has started to return!! Yipee!! I’m hoping to get 2 more loads done before I’m through for the day. I’m also working on crocheting a granny square lapagan. I’m using scrap yarn for it. Not sure what I’m going to do with it…it’s mostly something to keep my hands busy.

Here’s a picture of Riley with his new favorit toy…

…his brother’s Rubic’s Cubes! LOL! He loves to walk around with these things and twist the cubes around.

Well I’m off to get Riley down for a nap and then work on my afghan…I’ll post pictures of it soon.

MOnday – Weekend Catch UP

Guess what happened yesterday??? It RAINED!!! We needed it so badly. Today is overcast, drizzly & rainy and the temperatures sure have dropped! Praise God!!

I finally got Colt’s first 10 weeks of school lesson plans finished this weekend. I still need to add the Science, Grammar & Math, but will do that when those books come in. Now I need to move on to Riley’s homeschool schedule. I’m going to use this curriculum as the basis, but I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to spread it to 40 weeks. I will also be adding some kind of Bible curriculum to it. I want to keep it pretty informal, but at the same time, I want to keep him busy enough so he doesn’t disturb Colt’s lessons. Last year, I didn’t have anything scheduled for him and he kept getting into Colt’s stuff and bugging him. It was funny at times, but Colt got pretty frustrated by it. If anyone runs across a good Bible curriculum for toddlers, please send me the link!

A couple of weekends ago, we went to visit my parents. Marty & Dad went fishing and caught a few fish. I finally downloaded the pictures from the camera and came across this cute little gem of a photo that Marty took of Riley by the fish they caught….

Saturday and Sunday, Marty and Colt worked on a homemade underwater camera. They got it working pretty well, but the video tape they took didn’t work right. Saturday night we went to Lake Aquilla and submerged it. They got a little bit of video, but not much. Then yesterday afternoon, we went to Lake Whitney and submerged it. That’s when the tape didn’t work. I guess that’s what we get for using an old tape! Anyway, Colt and Marty are having a good time working on this together. Marty always comes up with some interest projects to say the least 🙂 I love having such a creative husband! I’ll try to take a picture of them and their underwater camera in the next day or so.

This weekend we happened upon one of those car DVD players on clearance at Walmart for $49. This will be perfect to keep the kids occupied while at the hospital. We’ll take several DVD’s with us. We’re going to Fort Worth on the 11th after Marty gets off work. We’re going to stay in at a hotel with my parent and then check in at the hospital at 7 am on the 12th. Marty told his boss that he’ll be off at least a week, but it really depends on what happens. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have any vacation time, so we’ll have to go a week without a paycheck. The week before delivery, I plan on buying 2-3 weeks worth of groceries that will hopefully carry us through. I’ll try to make arrangements to pay any bill later. I’m not going to worry about it…I know that God will provide.

Hugs & Blessings,
Susan

I’m so ready for Fall!! So, I thought I’d do a little redecorating on my blog before the baby comes. I’m looking forward to some cooler weather here!!

I’m so glad it’s Friday! Tonight we’re going out to eat at a new restaraunt in town…hopefully it will be good! Today, I’m going to continue working on Colt’s 1st 10 weeks of school lesson plans…probably will work on them all weekend as well. I want to get these knocked out so I can start working on Riley’s curriculum. Last night I ordered Colt’s science curriculum from off of eBay. I got the whole set on CD, I think Colt will really enjoy it! I still need to order his Grammar and Arithmetic, I’ll order from Keepers of the Faith if I can’t find them cheaper somewhere else. I want to get the best prices that I can since our budget is really tight right now.

Here’s a link to a website that has all kinds of great ideas for combining scrapbooking & homeschooling http://scrapbookingtolearn.com/. There’s some great instructions for making lapbooks (Scrap folders), using scrapbooking to learn, time line books, notebooking & Charlotte Mason. I know I’m going to use the lapbook idea for some my Texas History stuff and also the Time Line book idea.

Well, it’s time for me to start lunch, so I’d better go for now

Hugs & Blessings!

Prayer Request

Please keep my friend Kelvin and his family in your prayers. His Dad died suddenly on the 22nd. His Dad was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met and he will me missed!

Doctor’s Appointment & More Homeschool Stuff

My regularly scheduled OB appointment was today. Not really much to report…everything looks good and the doctor is please with how I’m doing. The delivery is still set for September 12th, I’m to report to the hospital at 7 am on the 12th. Three more weeks to go….

Here’s Colt’s 40 Week Homeschool Schedule (PDF File), it’s mostly complete…just need to add the Math & Grammar once I get those books in the mail.

Here’s Colt’s Week 1 Lesson Plan (PDF File), again, mostly complete – minus Math & Grammar.

Here are some Texas History links that I’ve run across or have been sent me…

Today & Question Answered

Question – Can you share what your using for age toddler through K? I’ve been looking at the CLE stuff but haven’t made up my mind yet. ~ Kim
Answer – I’m using this curriculum as the foundation of my planning, but I’m going to really create my own curriculum. The program listed above is only 26 weeks long and I want a program that’s 40 weeks long, so I will be using that curriculum to give me basic structure and then add from there. I plan on adding several things, including Bible & Self Helps. Once I get finished with Colt’s 40 week lesson plan, I’ll start on Riley’s. I should be mostly done with Colt’s this week, except for the subjects where I haven’t received all his books yet.

Also, I wanted to credit Miss Maggie from An Old Fashioned Education for all the help on creating Colt’s curriculum. Some of Colt’s curriculum is straight from her schedules and her MASSIVE list of free curriculum was a big help for me in picking out things of my own. I can’t tell you the time I saved by using this wonderful resource! Between her and Keepers of the Faith Colt’s curriculum came together in a snap!

If anyone happens to run across and good Texas history activities on the web, please send me the links! I’ve got a good book with some lesson plans, but I need some more activities. Also, if you run across any historical Texas fact or fiction books, please send me the names. I’ve found a couple on Project Gutenberg and I have 13 Days to Glory by Lon Tinkle, any others will be appreciated. I’m looking for books that would be appropriate for a 13 year old boy.

Well, I’ve got to get Riley down for a nap…he’s a tad grumpy!

Hugs & Blessings,
Susan

Monday Update and News :)

We left Mom’s this morning at around 5:30 and finally got home around 8 am.

We got to Mom’s Friday night around 10:45. We visited with them for a little bit and then went to bed. Saturday we drove to Temple to visit with Grandpa & Grandma. We had a good visit. Grandpa looks really good! They have him on oxygen and it has really improved his color. We ate lunch with them and then headed back to Mom’s. For dinner we went to a German restaraunt. Then Mom and I went shopping to find a baby boy and girl outfit for the baby. Sunday, Dad and Marty went fishing at Lake Belton and then to drop a table off at Grandpa & Grandma’s. They seemed to have a really good time and caught s few fish 🙂

After the guys got back, I got a really bad nose bleed…took 20 minutes for it to stop. It was the 3rd nosebleed since last Thursday. After I finally got it stopped, I got a really bad headache and was feeling a little dizzy. So we called my doctor to see what he wanted us to do. He told us it could be allergies or sinuses but it could also be preeclampsia, so he wanted me to go to the hospital and have it checked out just in case. We went to the emergency room and sat in there for nearly 2 hours, before they took me back to labor & delivery. They hooked me up to the fetal monitor and blood pressure machine. My blood pressure was fine and all is well with the baby. Turns out I have a urinary tract infection. The nose bleed and headache were most likely sinus problems. It’s been much drier here lately so the lack of humidity has probably dried out my sinuses, thus the nosebleeds. Anyway, I go back to my doctor tomorrow so I’m sure they’ll do some tests and stuff to see if anything else is going on. Thankfully, it wasn’t preeclampsia!

Mom finished my new quilt and also the quilt for the baby and one for baby Daniel. I’ll try to get pictures posted of them today or tomorrow. I still haven’t unloaded the car 🙂 I love my new quilt! Mom did it with embroidered pieces as well as fabric. There are embroidered sunflowers along with all sorts of sunflower fabrics. The baby’s quilt is a “Trip Around the World” quilt done with the cutest baby animal fabric. Daniel’s quilt is done with pieces of the fabric that we had originally picked out for his baby’s room, it was a Noah’s Ark theme. I really will try to get pictures posted today or tomorrow.

Now on to the news 🙂

I’ve decided to resign as a digital scrapbooking kit designer. With the baby coming soon and the turmoil our family will be in, I just needed to get rid of some of my responsibilities. We need the time to grieve without any added pressures. I’ve also deleted my 2 other blogs and closed down my newsletter. For the next few months, I’m going to be taking it easy and healing mentally and physically from this.

Hugs & Blessings!
Susan
