Blogging 101: Getting Started

So, you decided you want to blog. Now what? How do you go about setting up a blog? Happily, I can tell you that the “technical” part is pretty easy. But before you run out and set up your blog and write your first post, it would be wise to do a couple of things first–decide on your reason for blogging and discover your voice.

Are You wanting a simple online journal for your family and friends? Are you wanting to make an income? Is your blog going to have a certain focus? All of these questions are important to consider. Some people just want to journal what’s on their minds, while others want to focus on a certain topic. Figuring out the purpose of your blog is the most important first step of blogging. Before you even type up your first post, you should have an idea of where your blog is heading. This doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t make changes down the road, but it is helpful in keeping your blog focused.

A blog whose focus is constantly changing can be confusing and frustrating to readers. Trust me, I know this first hand. I have many interests and too many times I’ve tried to hyper-focus on just one of them (ie: only real food posts, or only crafting posts). I’d find myself getting bored or frustrated with the subject. So, I’ve had to really think about my focus for the blog. I am very eclectic and my life as a stay-at-home wife, homeschooling mom, and farming family is where my true passion and focus is. So, I’ve decided to revel in my eclectic-ness and focus on the subjects I know best and how they effect my life on a daily basis. I also have a real passion for Titus 2 mentorship and I look at that side of my blog as a ministry. So, I’ve figured out what my focus is. Now, it’s your turn! Write about something you’re passionate about. If you do that, your passion will draw readers in. Finding your focus will help you to be a better blogger and will bring you readers who will stick with you.

You will also want to consider your writing style. Are you more of a conversational writer or a technical writer? Sit down with a piece of paper and make a list of every subject you know enough about or are interested in enough to blog about. Do you see a pattern emerging? Do you see one or two specific main topic tread? Brain storming topic ideas will give you a fine list to start choosing blog post topics from.

Write your first couple of posts. This will give you a good indicator of your writing style. You will want to keep the same overall writing style in all of your posts. Let your personality shine through your writing. This is SO important. Your personality will draw people to you. I know most people would rather read a blog post with “personality” than one that is dry and boring.

By following these first couple of steps before even setting up your blog, you’re ahead of the game. You can now jump into blogging with both feet and be more organized, prepared and decisive. Now is the time to get your blog started, and next week, I’ll hep you get started with that!

Are there any other steps you would recommend before a new blogger even begins blogging?

Making A Blog Notebook

Amy over at Homeschool Blogging first introduced me to blog notebooks.  When I saw her example, I knew this was something I needed to do.  I’ve been looking for a way to be more organized in my blogging for some time.  I’ve been blogging for over 7 years and I had yet to be really organized about it. I had to do something, because my blog has grown substantially from when I first started blogging. Being organized in your blogging saves you a lot of time and headaches later on–trust me, I know this first hand!  Below, you will find a video tour the blog notebook that created after being inspired by Amy. This is a first in a series of posts I will be doing, entitled “Blogging 101“. I plan on covering everything from the very basics to the more advanced. I will also be sharing about how to make an income with your blog. I hope and pray that this series is a blessing to my readers and will help them achieve their goals to be a successful blogger. So keep your eyes open for future posts in this series!

How do you organized your blog work?
Please share your great ideas, I’m always looking for ways to be more organized in my blogging!
