Idealistic or faithful?

I was rejoicing in my friend’s engagement. She was sharing her dreams of the future with me and showing me her hope chest. She was very much in love with her fiancé and had everything planned to perfection. We discussed her wedding plans, and our views and ideals on marriage itself. One of the questions that came up was if she would continue to work once the children came, and the appropriation of funds coming into the marriage.

I was delighted to hear that my friend intended to be a stay at home mother once the children were born. Prior to that, they were going to have his money and her money in separate accounts with her keeping a secret account for provision for herself in case of marital problems necessitating her setting up a home for herself and the children. I expressed my concern that she should see this as a necessary step when entering into marriage. She responded with saying that one never knew what the future would hold and it was unrealistic to believe that just because she was married, there would be a guarantee of happiness. She intended to be prepared for any event that should arise.

I told her that it was foolhardy to enter marriage- (a Christian marriage at that) with one eye on the altar and the other on the divorce court. I commented that it seemed to me to be a failing of trust on her part and also that it was in fact laying a foundation of mistrust and deceit in her marriage right from the beginning. Her retort was that I was just being idealistic and that being left without financial security in the event of a marriage failure was not on her agenda. She could not see my point of view so I let it drop- God would have to deal with her heart. I felt saddened by her cynical attitude.

To enter marriage with the view that it may very well end in divorce is a tragic view and a distortion of the covenental view that Christ has for marriage. Marriage is to be built on trust. If there are problems, then they should be worked through. The marriage is already failed in the context of trust if one of the parties has a parachute to use to bail out with when or if the going gets tough. The area of trust has been compromised already by my friend keeping her account secret- she has allowed doubt and deceit to cloud her mind. One cannot enter a covenant with lies and doubts and plans for self preservation instead of trust in God. Not in a Christian marriage.

The whole concept of marriage is built on trust and accountability to each other. I do not think it is idealistic or unrealistic. I think it is a basic principle of marriage that cannot be compromised. Issues of doubt and fear should be ironed out long before the nuptials. For to be double-minded about your commitment in your marriage is to invite trouble and failure. The heart of the faithful is strong- but where there is any weakness in either spouse’s commitment there will be not only lack of trust but lack of blessing.

My prayer is that the LORD will speak to my friend’s heart and give her the commitment and confidence that are hers as she trusts Him and her husband to build and bless their marriage. But first she must let go of the parachute and show herself faithful. Happiness can come only through true commitment and faith.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.” James 1:5-8

Finding Time to Do It All

Clock clip art from Graphics Fairy
graphicsfairy.blogspot.com

The Lord has been reminding me about a lesson He’s been working on teaching me for over a year now: time management. You might say I feel pressure to ‘get it all done’ and that no one can really get it all done, but there are certainly a few things on the list which must be done each and every day without fail. A few of those things include feeding my family, keeping the house clean including making sure there are clean dishes and clothes as well as clutter picked up and the floors and tables cleaned, homeschooling the kids, naps for the twins, and all of this interrupted with things like tantrums, diapers, phone calls, and who knows what else!

So how to fit it all in? There are plenty of articles out there telling me to lower my standards, that no way can I get all of this done in a single day. That can’t happen in my family. There are some basic standards that must be met and maintained, and they are not negotiable. If I choose to spend my time on the computer, in a book, or even outside playing with the kids or inside with a family movie, then I’ve chosen not to do the things necessary and I end up either staying up really late, causing more work for everyone, or starting out behind the next day. None of those options is acceptable.

What’s the answer?

It’s quite simple, actually. I forget how simple it is.

The answer is to give the Lord His time first. In this season, I cannot do as I was doing in the season where I learned this lesson and tithe my time. That’s a wonderful habit and one of these days when my youngest children are to a more independent age once again, I can resume doing that. The Lord’s timing in teaching me that lesson was perfect, and I was able to tithe my time just as I would tithe an income (if I’d had one).

What I can do, though, is keep my commitment to Him and start my day each morning not only in flippant silent prayer, but in the Word and in an attitude of worship. The beginning of my day is my giving the day to Him, and for the rest of the day He walks with me and smooths the way and I continue to talk with Him and praise Him, until the end of my day when I rest in Him and bring my supplications and requests. It’s the Lord’s prayer pattern over the span of an entire day.

Sometimes, as recently, I forget that it’s that easy. There’s so much to be done, I let the simple act of reading His Word and bringing my worship attitude before Him be set aside for something quick, even something as simple as cooking breakfast or folding that load of laundry I left on the couch last night. It’s about simple obedience, and the reward for that obedience is a day when I actually get just about everything – if not MORE than I’d hoped or planned – completed.

That’s not to say that the enemy doesn’t try very hard to derail my day, but if I’ve started my day with the Lord then He is already with me and all I need do under those attacks is resist the enemy and put it in God’s hands. His hands are pretty big, ya know. Even bigger than my dirty laundry pile.

God and Politics- My Take

Although he’s regularly asked to do so, God does not take sides in American politics. ~George J. Mitchell, 1987

Politics. I am not very much into it. Yet, it is everywhere I am. Invasive; on my radio, on the websites I view. It would be much worse if I watched television. It’s very rarely pleasant or “kind” {“so-and-so in such-and-such year was terrible at this-and-that -vote for me instead!“}. It just seems that those who become involved in politics, I mean really entrenched and involved, must become someone else or magnify the negative. Interestingly, the above quote is from a Democrat. I think stereotypically, the other side would disagree.

O God of earth and altar,

Bow down and hear our cry,

Our earthly rulers falter,

Our people drift and die;

The walls of gold entomb us,

The swords of scorn divide,

Take not thy thunder from us,

but take away our pride.

 ~ G. K. Chesterton, 1915

War. It’s all around the world. A ‘war’ of one kind or another is present in so many countries. Observably, wars also have politics at their heart. I believe what Carl Sandburg said:

I am the people- the mob- the crowd- the mass. Do you know that all great work of the world is done through me?

~ Carl Sandburg, 1916

Which leads to a thought. If the people drive these two connected facets of life, what can be done?

To pray is to change.
~ Richard Foster, 1978

praying hands clip art

Prayer is powerful and even if (even though?) God may not take sides in politics it is important to understand that He doesn’t operate as a democracy or a republic- He is the ultimate authority- all other authority is in place because He put them there. The prayer should be for ourselves to change. To be the people that God would have us be.

Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’; aim at earth and you will get neither.

The Danger of Gossip

Today something happened a while back on my Facebook, which brought the whole “gossiping” thing front and center to me.  I won’t go into details, but to sum it up a friend was hurt because someone was able to get some personal information about her via my commenting to her Facebook status (HELLO FACEBOOK–YOU REALLY NEED TO GET YOUR PRIVACY PROBLEMS WORKED OUT!).

The Danger of Gossip

Clip Art by Graphics Fairy
graphicsfairy.blogspot.com

First, let’s take a look at the word “Gossip”, as defined by the Webster dictionary:

Gossip
GOS’SIP, n.
One who runs from house to house, tattling and telling news; an idle tattler. [This is the sense in which the word is now used.]
Mere tattle; idle talk.

So to gossip is a person who spreads tales from house to house.  In today’s world, that would also include blogs, Facebook, websites, etc.  A gossip like to talk and I’m as guilty of it as the next person.  It’s too easy to forget that there is a person behind the story.  It’s hard to avoid gossip.  It’s constantly on TV (even the evening news!) and staring at you from the cover of magazines at the grocery checkout.  It’s everywhere.  It’s so easy to think that the latest story about Brad and Angelina or Jessie and Sandra are just normal topics of conversation…but that is gossip.  Whenever you talk (or post) something about another person that you do not have permission to share, you are gossiping.  The Bible has a lot to say about gossip:

  • A gossip is a revealer of secrets; so do not mix with him who flatters with his lips. –Proverbs 20:19
  • One going with slander is a revealer of secrets, but the faithful of spirit keeps the matter hidden. –Proverbs 11:13
  • A perverse man causes fighting, and a whisperer separates chief friends. –Proverbs 16:28
  • A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.   –Proverbs 18:7-8
  • Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.  –Proverbs 21:23
  • having guilt because they have cast off the first faith. And with it all they also learn to be idle, going around the houses; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things they ought not. –I Timothy 5:12-13
  • And even as they did not think fit to have God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do the things not right, being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; being full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, evil habits, becoming whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, insolent, proud, braggarts, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, perfidious, without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous order of God, that those practicing such things are worthy of death, not only do them, but have pleasure in those practicing them. –Romans 1:28-32

So why do people gossip?  I have found that the main reason is simply not realizing this is what they’re doing.  How often do you find yourself chatting with your girlfriends about the latest Hollywood scandal?  Or about the odd behavior of a friend or neighbor.  What seems like just a fun conversation is truly nothing more than gossip.  It’s just as wrong as telling your friend’s secrets to everyone else.  This is one of the forms of gossip that I see most prevalent on the internet.

One of the main reasons people gossip is to build themselves up by tearing others down.  It gives them a sense of superiority because of the knowledge that they have on other people.   These kinds of gossips can be the most dangerous because they share other peoples faults and failings and point to them like a blinking  arrow….”look at those people’s faults, not mine”, they seem to say.  They share embarrassing and shameful details about another person because they think it takes the focus off of their problems.

Gossip can hurt and can ruin friendships.  I know the whole “Sticks & Stones” saying, but truly, gossip can cause damage and hurt.  Spreading possibly embarrassing information about others is mean spirited and wrong.  And so much that goes on Facebook and blogs can be considered gossip.  Instead of going from house to house to tell tales, we just let our fingers do the walking and do it online…where there is a bigger audience and a bigger chance of bigger hurt.

I admit that I’ve played a part in gossip and it’s something that I’m in continual prayer about.  It’s just too easy to fall in line and gossip about some celebrity and the more you do it, the easier it is to start doing it about friends and family.  Gossip breeds more gossip.  Gossip grows more and more with each telling.  Before you know it, it takes over too much of your life.  Nip the gossip monster in the bud.

But if you have a problem with gossip, how do you stop it?  The best way I’ve found is to pray that the Lord helps you with it and to remember to pray for forgiveness each time you slip and gossip.  I also avoid anything that might be considered gossip.  That means turning the channel, ignoring the magazine covers, and telling friends that you just don’t want to hear the latest gossip they want to share with you.  You might lose friends over it.  I’ve lost friends because I’ve told them that I didn’t want to hear the gossip they were constantly wanting to share with me.

As Christians we are to love each other and build each other up.  We are to think of others and then ourselves.  We shouldn’t need to build ourselves up in this manner.  Our self-esteem should come from our relationship with the Father, not any other thing on earth.   Who wants to join me in saying no to gossip?

Homeschool Legacy Native America Once-A-Week Unit Study Review :: Schoolhouse Review Crew

As a member of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I recently received the Once-A-Week Unit Study entitled Native America from Homeschool Legacy.

About Once-A-Week Unit Studies

Once-A-Week Unit Studies from Homeschool Legacy are fun and interactive Christian based unit studies for grades 2-12.  They are cross-curricular and include many different subjects while still staying on the “main” subject.  I was able to try the Native America unit study to review.  Once-A-Week Unit Studies will also help your Boy Scout or American Heritage Girl earn their merit badges on many different subjects–a nice addition!

Each unit study includes a weekly schedule and tips on how to use the study.  I love that you can find the majority of the books you need at your local library, and even a few of them from free sources such at Project Gutenberg.  You may even already own a few of the titles.  You can find these comprehensive unit studies for $17.95 at the Homeschool Legacy website.

You can fine Once-A-Week Unit Studies covering the following topics:

  • Horsing Around (4 weeks)
  • Knights & Nobles (4 weeks)
  • Forest for the Trees (4 weeks)
  • Birds of a Feather (4 weeks)
  • Native America (6 weeks)
  • Lewis & Clark: From Sea to Shining Sea (7 weeks)
  • Early Settlers in America (6 weeks)
  • Revolutionary Ideas (7 weeks)
  • Weather on the Move (7 weeks)
  • We the People: Getting to Know Your Constitution (8 weeks)

My Thoughts on the Native America Once-A-Week Unit Study

Learning about Native America is important to my family, as part of my husband’s heritage is Native American.  We don’t know much about it, because his grandmother looked at her Native American heritage as shameful.  I don’t want my children growing up with the outlook, so I feel it’s important for them to learn as much about it as possible and even celebrate it.  That’s why I was so excited to get to review the Native America Once-A-Week Unit Study.

Native America is an exhaustive unit study that covers:

  • The Northeast Woodland Nations
  • The Southeast Woodland Nations
  • The Southwest Nations
  • The Plains Nations
  • The Pacific Northwest Coast Nations
  • The California/Plateau/Great Basin Nations

This unit study contains sixty-one pages and is scheduled to be completed in six weeks.  Everything you need for each week can be found at the beginning of each section.

The Native America Once-A-Week Unit Study is well researched and comprehensive.  You could easily extend it into a much longer time period than just six weeks and still not use all the suggested books, movies and activities.  I was really impressed with just how extensive the Native America unit study was.

How We Used the Native America Once-A-Week Unit Study

Riley certainly enjoyed the activities and reading selections.  We chose to use the Native America Once-A-Week Unit Study as a summer study.  We like to school year round, but like to do things like unit studies during the summer.  They are a bit more relaxed and fun than just our regular studies.  We followed the weekly schedule and it worked out perfectly for our summer study.  The reading selections were fun and I think he learned so much from them!  We exhausted our small local library of every Native American book available.  I think that now, Riley has a much better idea of his Native American heritage.  I think that overall, this unit study was a hit and we will certainly consider purchasing more of the Once-A-Week Unit Studies from Homeschool Legacy!
